Stop using Fridge.

If you have decided to live the self-sustained living method, First thing that you have to do is to sell your fridge. You might wonder, what did the machine have to do with my decision of living a self-sustained life? The self-sustained living method has nothing to do with the fridge.

The key is to get less dependent on the objects and live with what you have is the aim of this living method. Next question, comes out of your mind, Is this even possible?
Why not?
Without proper education, Electricity, and all the other stuff our ancestors managed to live with what they had and were living healthy. They were working hard for sure. All the inventions were made to ease the task. But there are some things we can avoid. The living method doesn't aim to have a hardcore life again, but, by being a thoughtful and little effort we can lead a content life and contributing to society as well.

Why the Fridge is a villain here?
Please avoid the fridge for the following reason.
i) We fail to plan.
Having a fridge, affects our decision making skill. We tend to cook without a plan and end up having leftovers. Decision making is a practice. When we fail practicing it at one thing, i starts to affect other reasoning as well. Without fridge, everyday we practice planning by, using exact amount required for cooking. Not buying extras that we do not need in the near future. And we eliminate waste eventually.

ii) It is not necessary.
As our country has lots of shopping options, you can walk out of the home and reach out a shop within two minutes. We need not drive a car for 15 minutes to shop lots of stuff to store and use. We can just plan for the next day and then work on it. (For things that spoil soon)

iii) Chlorofluorocarbon
The use of fridge and a stabilizer leads to release of this chemical compound which affects the ozone layer and increasing the global warming.

iv) Toxic effects
Food stored in the fridge releases toxins, There are a lot of foods should never go to the fridge, some even before cooking, lots of food after cooking.
Cooked potatoes, meats, mushrooms, eggs, onions, and fish releases toxins. No food is good after 3 days.

Am just going to the kitchen and opening my fridge, What do I See?
An apple, I do not know when did even it came into my fridge, I have a box of curd, a box of chutney, a box of leftover rice, a big box of Dosa and Idli Batter, Leftover curry, Milk cartons,  Eggs, Flowers for temple visit, Vegetables. These are the things I have in my fridge.

Next, let me open the freezer. I have a peas bag, a  corn bag, Paneer cubes in a box, some grated coconut,an ice cream carton, and some ice cubes on a tray.

Seriously! That's it?!! These things essentially need a fridge?
No. We can manage these stuff without having a fridge. It is just possible.

Is it possible for a nuclear family to manage without a fridge?
i would say, Why not?
Lets see my fridge. Let's strike out one by one for which a fridge is not essential.

i) Curd - We can strike out because every day we buy milk and making curd every day is just possible.

ii) Apple - We can strike out because (I don't even remember how it came in. Still thinking!!) Apple does not need a fridge, it is just fine outside. After all the wax treatment it is not going to be spoiled easily.

iii) Chutney - Clearly it is a little leftover. I could have munched my last dosa with extra chutney, which would have been delicious. I kept it inside because I have a fridge at home. So we can strike it out.

iv) Leftover Rice - Seriously, I did it? There are some recipes with the leftover rice you can totally do it without storing it in the fridge and forgetting later. I know lots of recipes, but still, I put it in the fridge thinking about not wasting it.  Strikeout.

v) Vegetables - If I walk out of my house and walk further every hundred steps I can see a vegetable store. Vegetables have table time as well. Strikeout.

vi) Dosa and Idli Batter - Yeah. We have to tick this box. We need Fridge to store a dosa or idli batter. Later in the post, I will show you how to manage the Dosa and Idli Batter.

vii) Milk cartons - Yeah we need to tick this box. Will discuss it later.

viii) Leftover curry - Again its on me. I spent an hour to cook that Rajma curry, it tasted awesome. Next time I will cook the exact required amount of curry or will manage the leftover with next day morning dosa. So, Strikeout.

ix) Flowers - Flowers are just fine when kept in a mud pot. It is ok for a day.

x) Eggs - Eggs need not be stored in the Fridge. it has a table period. I kept it in the fridge because to save it from my kid reaching it. Strikeout.

See from all the ten items, the fridge is just essential for Dosa Batter and Milk.

i) To manage Milk without a fridge.
The scenarios for storing the milk in the fridge would be a two reason, for a baby or it is a leftover.

The milk is fine overnight without the fridge. The next day morning you can use it.

When there is a baby at home, you think about storing some for a baby.  The milk kept outside is better than chilled milk. If the baby was not awake last night, and the milk is left untouched in a table, it is not too late to turn it into a curd. There are so many recipes with curd, you can try it.

If your milkman is arriving late, You are storing the milk for the next day early morning. You can boil the milk and keep it outside itself. It doesn't spoil.

ii) Dosa Batter
People going to work, a neutral family and family with a baby need Dosa or an Idli Batter in stock. For just one reason a big fridge is holding up space in your kitchen, for which you spent a few grand, and spend a grand of electricity bill a month.

i) A nuclear family has a maximum of 4 members. You can grind the batter once for two days.

ii) Store the batter in the mud pot and below the mud pot put some sand and wet it.

iii) If you feel the batter is sour, the next day, you can mix the batter with new batter you ground or you can grind some rice and mix along the batter.

iv) Only Idli batter needs a grinder and the process of grinding the black gram and rice separately. For dosa, it is fine to run the rice and black gram together in the mixie and you can use it next day morning.

v) Work as a community in the process.
If you are living in an apartment, and if you have close friends, This method works. Form a group of 3 members. Every day one can grind and share it with the others. You have to adjust and have a good understanding of this method to work out. But it is not impossible.

vi) Buy it for an emergency.
Lots of people are working women. Everybody will come across a long day. In those days buy it from the outlet. It is not less nutritious than a batter resting for five days in a fridge. Both have the same effect on health.

vii) Another method is to grind the black gram and the Idli rice separately and mix it with water. It works totally fine.  People used to do this when they go for a vacation. You can try this method when you need an Idli badly, and you have no time to grind for it.

With the help of the Internet, there are lots of hacks and tips available through which one can learn a lot an lead. It only takes a heart with pure Intention of leading a healthy life, and some dedication towards it.

Inspiration

I was bought up in a joint family. We were ten in numbers. And my grandmother, mom, and aunt ( Periamma) managed to handle things without a fridge.  In our home, morning breakfast was Idli, lunch was a combo of a Rice, Sambhar, Rasam, and Kootu, and Dinner was (Variety of) Dosa or some other varieties like Chapathi, Poori, and Upma.

They took a routine to grind the batter. The leftover went to the Maid, and to their family sometimes.

So, all thanks to the family structure which was built by our ancestors. We learned to live contented with what we had. And it trained me as an adult to adjust and cope up with everything when I moved to the city and lived with friends and even alone.

When you are addicted to some comforts, moving out of it is totally hard. But, when it is not good for health and society, avoiding it is intelligence. This small step will lead to a lot of health benefits.

You might wonder why I have a fridge at home!! Right??
I have In-laws in home, I cannot decide about having or selling the Fridge at home. Shh...!
